The Andromeda Galaxy (also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224; often referred to as the Great Andromeda Nebula in older texts) is a spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It is the nearest spiral galaxy to our own, the Milky Way.

The dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC185 (entry 185 in the New General Catalogue) is the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way. It features at No. 18 in the list of nearest galaxies (the first 17 being satellites of the Milky Way) with M31 (the "Great Andromeda Nebula"), of which it is a satellite, coming in at No. 34.

NB In the above list the galaxies are measured from Earth, with our Milky Way being the closest galaxy at No. 1. This means 1 must be subtracted from all the rankings shown. Thus NGC185 is shown as 19th from the Earth and therefore is 18th from the Milky Way.
