Zombie fire ants wander around their mounds until their heads fall off and they die. The phorid fly is responsible for the zombie fire ants, as they lay eggs inside the ants that develop into maggots, which eat the ants' brains. The ants wander for about two weeks, and the head falls off in about a month.

All this is to help control the fire ant population.
