A wooden toy sword?
"till at last, overcome by fatigue, he lay down in a narrow space between two rocks, within a few yards of the stream and still grasping his toy sword, no longer a weapon but a
companion, sobbed himself to sleep.

That's right. He carries it around with him as does battle with invisible foes. Of course, at the end of the story the boy throws the sword into the burning wreck that was once his house, which was destroyed by a battle. The boy lost his family and all he knew due to the battle, illustrating Ambrose Bierce's antiwar theme, which is prominent in many of his works.
