What is the highest grossing film in the United States that was not produced or co-produced by a U.S. company?

Question #105982. Asked by Datsmeharse. (May 30 09 10:51 PM)

    Hmm... a tough one.

I'm going with "Slumdog Millionaire". It was produced by Celador (UK), Film4 (Wales) and Pathé (France), and earned $141 million in the US as at 24 May 2009.

There's a couple more that have earned a bit more, according to the same source as yours...

I can only come up with "Taken" (2009). It was produced by EuropaCorp (France), and has earned $144 million in the US as at 24 May 2009.

Only problem is, IMDB lists a few of US entities like All Pictures Media, Papillon Productions and Wintergreen Productions amongst the film's production companies, although the extent of their involvement is unclear. However, it looks like US companies were involved in the production as opposed to merely the distribution of the film (as was the case for "Slumdog Millionaire").

Is this the title you're thinking of?

I thought the answer was "Croucing Tiger, Hidden Dragon"

Its wiki page says: "After its US premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival, it grossed US$128 million in the United States alone, becoming the highest-grossing foreign-language film in American history."

But unless its adjusted for inflation, it must have been beaten.

Or, the answer is not a foriegn language film.

I think I might have found the actual answer. I guessed from CTHD being less than Slumdog that the answer was an English Language film. So it was just a matter of guessing where from - UK, Canada or Australia. I recall a very popular Australian movie from back in the 80s.

    Crocodile Dundee. $174m

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was an international co-production between companies in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the USA, so it doesn't fit the criteria. The American companies involved in the production were Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, Sony Pictures Classics and Good Machine.

Good job on "Crocodile Dundee" though. I missed that one. IMDB only lists one Australian production company so you may have found the answer.
