It was Edward Jenner. He had noticed that milkmaids rarely got smallpox, and often caught a virus called cowpox, which is not as serious as smallpox. He took some matter from the cowpox sore of Sarah Nelmes and put into two sores on the arm of James Phipps. He later did the same with some matter from a smallpox sore and noticed that the boy did not catch smallpox. I'm learning about this in my GCSE history class.
