Antoine Simon (1736 in Troyes, France – 1794). He was a shoemaker at Rue des Cordeliers in Paris. A member of the Club of the Cordeliers, representative of the Paris Commune, he was designated to watch over Louis XVII at the Temple. However, he cruelly tortured and physically and mentally abused Louis XVII. Among other things, he forced him to blaspheme his parents, consume alcohol, and to have sex with prostitutes. He was later removed from his position and executed on the guillotine on 28 July 1794, during the "White Terror".

He was placed under the care of the illiterate Citizen Richard, a vulgar cobbler, who was told to re-educate the royal child. The little 8-year-old was naturally impressionable and vulnerable after the forced separation. Young Louis was taught revolutionary songs and learned to curse his mother, just upstairs.
