What is the biggest "roadkill" problem in Australia and how is it different from the United States?

    Question #106109. Asked by 29CoveRoad. (Jun 05 09 5:56 PM)

According to the Austrlian Bureau of Statistics, found in External Links at end of article on Australia in Wikipedia, the leading cause of road deaths in Australia is alcohol.
That page was last updated on Dec. 8, 2006, and stated clearly that Australians drink at 'risky to high risk' levels of alcohol in 15% of the population, with 21% of 18-24 yr-old males doing so, and 31% of females of the same age drinking and driving, also.
The Bureau said that is the same percent as the UK, but higher than anywhere else in the world> That would include the US.
It was also called this: "Main cause of deaths on Australian roads" - 'roadkill' - with over 2,000 dying and about 7,000 injured this way in 1998 alone. The article went on to say 'why' = "low income, low education, unemployment and unskilled occupations."
I'd say that must be the biggest 'roadkill' problem in Australia and how it's different than the US. Agree?

Just a bit of clean-up here to make my answer more clear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia took me to the External Link. I missed an 'a' the first time I wrote the answer, which as an old editor was disappointing.
I also didn't make it clear the 'page' referred to as last dated Dec. 8. '06 was the one on the Australian Bureau of Statistics, not Wiki. There: hope it's more easy to understand now. In the US, I'd say the main reason this doen't occur is because of more education opportunities, including vocational training, and because of policing of said alcohol consumption and driving. It's always been evident to me there are many checkpoints for that very reason if any especially younger and partying drivers may be on the road in the US.

"Roadkill" is defined as: an animal or animals that have been struck and killed by motor vehicles.

The animal with the highest numbers killed on the road in the U.S.: squirrels (41 million)

In Australia, kangaroos and wallabies are the most frequently killed animals on the roads.
