We can eliminate a lot of confusion by using " 13th annual Grammy Awards" or "12th annual Grammy Awards."
In this case, the 14th annual Grammy Awards, were presented on March 14, 1972.
Record of the Year
"It's Too Late" - Carole King
"Joy to the World" - Three Dog Night
"My Sweet Lord" - George Harrison
"Theme from Shaft" - Isaac Hayes
"You've Got a Friend" - James Taylor

However: Joplin's music returned to popularity in the early 1970s with the release of a million-selling album of Joplin's rags recorded by Joshua Rifkin followed by the Academy award-winning movie The Sting which featured several of his compositions, such as "The Entertainer". In 1976 Joplin was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

Thus: Best Classical Performance - Instrumental Soloist(s) without Orchestra -- Joshua Rifkin - Piano Rags by Scott Joplin
