Seems more than one 'late soulster' felt like you say. I'll start with the "King of Soul" *Isaac Hayes*. He had a hard youth (most did) but became a very well-known and liked soul music innovator, especially after the theme music for "Shaft" - but though he was liked, that became more difficult for some friends, wives, kids and even himself to do as he aged.
Hayes lived to be 65, fairly aged for a musician of his era, but after he first decided he must go to Africa for several years, then "became a Scientologist [who was] intolerant of any criticism" of his church, and quit he work he had because of that, his "fortune and income was severely [compromised]." He died on Dec. 12, '07, but got his 1st Grammy in 2008; too late. He quit his job on "South Park" -because they "not only made fun of most churches, but also his" and he couldn't take it. Nothing was said about a 'hope he'd be better received later'-not found at IsaacHayes.com or in Wiki or a few more links from External Links there, but he did say he was "misunderstood" and went onstage to try to sing after suffering a stroke from which he could barely speak. He suffered another and died alone on a treadmill, about which I have an opinion I just won't write.
*Ike Turner* was certainly a man few people liked and he didn't understand that. He worked not only R+B (very like soul; its precursor) but also, as you know, rock. "He wrote a less than reliable [auto-bio]- 'Taking Back My Name' -[he is also quoted as saying 'Ain't it the woman's fault if she stays around and lets me hit her?'] and etc.
He got HIS only Grammy [in '07] for a "blues-cross of many tunes done primarily [formerly] with Tina"...after which he said he felt the "music industry was finally recognising his contribution after years of ignoring him because of disapproval of his personal life."
He was dead by '08 of liver cancer. Links go to his obits, & his bios are on his website http://www.IkeTurner.com and more, where it says things like "history will always remember him as Mr. Tina Turner." Hope to follow any more answers you get.
