Only went to Wiki for this answer, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/laser_printer and I suggest you also explore any 'External Links' usually found at the end of every article there, plus any words in blue that are of interest, because as you probably know, they're all links, and outside sources added to Wiki make a big difference.
Canon, Epson and Hewlett-Packard (plus Lexmark) all worked on this new type of printer, and it seems they did do it as teams. (I know just a bit about this; a family member was an engineer for H-P until retirement.)
The first engineer credited with developing the laser printer is an "engineer from Canon, Ichiro Endo, in August of 1977." Then all the listed companies above worked on and with laser printers.
They involve using a process called "photolithography" and use electrically heated chambers (very tiny ones) that cause ink to expand to tiny droplets from bubbles, and so be propelled onto paper.
Formerly (and perhaps still) thermal printers was/are used' they employ thermal heat to warm the paper intead, to ready it to take an image = ATMs, some copiers, etc.

... they all use thermal printers instead, for... etc.
(am trying to clean up the poor spelling and all that)
Hope I caught most errors, if not all.

Sheesh. Gave you a link to inkjet printers. Here is the one you need for laser printers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/laser_printer which is what I typed at first as well. I thought! This is new information for you:
The first engineer to make a laser printer was from Xerox, a man named "Gary Starkweather, who made a prototype called the xerographic copier in 1960... this was used for high volume printing; for things like mailers and invoices... it did not become available to others until an IBM model, the 3800, was made in 1976...no printer was availbable to individuals until the making of the Xerox Star 8010 in 1981. Then Hewlett-Packard, Canon and those previously mentioned all worked with it....
"HP made the first mass-produced machine for personal use in '84, with Canon engineering and HP software." But it cost $17,000, so as you can imagine, not many used it to begin with - not til inkjet printers were made in mass production. Again, follow all information you see, to the right, the left and below to find out all you need to know.
Sorry about former error. Am new at this!
