Are many Canon and Hewlett Packard laser cartridges interchangeable?

Having worked in two electronics stores, I can say with some authority that, among current models, HP and Canon laser printer cartridges are generally not interchangeable. Though both are manufactured to include the imaging drum (as opposed to Brother where the imaging drum is a separate unit), I have never found compatibility between the two.
Browsing these lists at Office Depot seemed to confirm this:
I have owned three Packards and fixed and helped restore several more. Mention "Packard" to anyone of a certain age and the stories will come rolling out. I hope this quiz is more informative than challenging.
