    Why did every stagecoach that left Bristol on September 1, 1752 for the two-day journey to London not arrive until September 14?

    The change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian one.

    Because when Great Britain made the changeover from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar they had to lose 12 days in order to reestablish an accurate time, so 2nd September 1752 was directly followed by 14th September 1752 in Britain and all its Dominions, including the then American colonies.

    For the same reason the UK tax year begins on the 6th April, which is 25th March (Lady Day, the first of the four Quarter Days) on the old Julian calendar.
