No!
This is one of those Internet rumors, spread on lists of "fascinating facts" that are usually more often wrong than right. According to rumormill.info, it began on the Michigan Department of Agriculture web site, which has since taken it down.
The theory was that the act of chewing, or perhaps the sugar rush, was better at keeping you awake than caffeine. Sadly, nobody actually seems to have bothered to test the theory before putting into the Internet rumor mill to be passed around forever. The Ohio State University Extension was more than happy to debunk the rumor.
Caffeine is one of the most effective stimulants there is. Even expensive prescription-only medications rarely beat it, and that's why the Army passes out caffeine gum rather than more expensive stimulants.
In general, whenever you get one of those "lists of trivia" forwarded by one of your friends, you're far more likely to be right if you guess that it's false rather than true. The more "amazing" it is, the more likely it is that it's amazing because somebody made it up out of whole cloth.

A good alarm clock beats either of them..... (So does a 9 yr old who wants to go swimming even though it's 9 am (Sunday) and the pool (100 yards away) doesn't open till 11 am.)
