As one who grew up in Minnesota, I've always considered International Falls, MN's claim as 'The Icebox of the Nation' to be true. According to
http://www.weatherbase.com
the average annual temperature there is 37 degrees F. However, often you will see towns in northern Montana with astonishingly low readings. A check of several of them in Weatherbase does not yield anything that approaches that of International Falls. Therefore, I think their claim is true.

Sorry to burst your bubble Minnesota, but Fraser Colorado has been proven to be the coldest US city in the lower 48 states coming in at an average annual temperature of 32.5 degrees. International Falls comes in at 36.4 degrees. Several other cities are actually colder than International Falls, such as Embarrass,MN(34.4),Leadville,CO(34.9),West Yellowstone,MO(35.0),Big Piney,WY(35.1),Silverton,Co(35.3),Standley,ID(35.3),Brian Head,UT(35.5),and Wisdom,MO(35.5) just to name a few. As the results are visible you can tell Fraser Colorado is by far the coldest US city in the lower 48 and deserves the Ice Box of the Nation title more than International Falls.
