Now Montenegro is independent, is there any reason it has kept its Italian name rather than use a new one in their own language?

It still has its original name which is Crna Gora or Црна Гора. This means Black Mountain, and guess what Montenegro means... Montenegro isn't used by the locals - we use this form as Italy was probably the nearest 'civilised' country to it and we heard the Italians use it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montenegro The Montenegrin name is pronounced approx. cherna-gora or tserna-gora, and the combination 'crn' is a bit off-putting to some. Which could be another reason for sticking to Montenegro...

Makes sense now, I guessed it wasn't likely to be their choice of names. Cerna is Russian as well, like the song otchi cherny, dark eyes.
