What is the difference between a theist and a deist?

    Question #106789. Asked by star_gazer. (Jul 02 09 10:15 PM)

A deist believes that there is a supreme god who created the universe, but who does not interact with it miraculously, and whose existence can be demonstrated by reason and observation of nature, without the need for faith.

A theist believes that god (or gods, for a polytheist) plays a personal and active role in the universe. "The use of the word theism as indicating a particular doctrine of monotheism arose in the wake of the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century to contrast with the then emerging deism which contended that God — though transcendent and supreme — did not intervene in the natural world and could be known rationally but not via revelation."
