During the Civil War, did the American flag have fewer stars than it did previously as a result of the southern states seceding from the union?

    Question #106816. Asked by unclerick.

No. The American flag before and around the begining of the Civil war, January 1861 to 1863, had 34 stars (representing the newest state Kansas). Later, between 1863 to 1865 it had 35 stars (for the inclusion of West Virginia).

The Union flag never decreased the number of stars on it.

The reason for this is that Lincoln's basic premise was that secession from a "perpetual union" was not possible. He never acknowledged that the rebel states had left, but only that they were in rebellion. That's why he could proclaim the emancipation of slaves in them: by his reasoning they were under his jurisdiction.
