    How many American presidents have been Republicans and how many have been Democrats?

    Democrats = 14 or 15, depending on whether Grover Cleveland counts as one or two.

    A difficult question to answer exactly... There have been 19 presidents sworn in as Republicans and 14 sworn in as Democrats... There is some debate about Andrew Johnson and that may bring the Republican total down to 18. The remaining balance from the 43 presidents are either Whigs, Democratic-Republicans or unaffiliated.
