You would 'knit 2 together through the back of the loop' in order to decrease a stitch. Plain Knit 2 together makes the two 'togethered' stitches lie on the work so that they slope from left up to right as you face the front of the material. Knitting through the back of the loop makes them lie on the other diagonal. The choice of these depends on the desired visual effect. (And there are other ways to decrease which produce slightly different effects, as well.)
