    Back in the olden days, how long would the average match-lit street light stay lit? Did the same person light them as well as dousing them at daylight?

    		Streetlighters not only lit the lights and turned them off, they were also responsible for maintaining them - trim the wicks if they were candle-lit, replace the oil or the gas mantle for oil or gas lights. The lights were expected to burn from sunset to sunrise - the length of time varied during the year, depending on the season and latitude. The use of publicly-maintained street lights replaced the earlier custom in some cities of having city residents place lights in the windows that faces onto the street.
