Bob Denver played Gilligan in "Gilligan's Island", a show about some castaways who could be said to have been 'left in the lurch' when their boat ran aground. Ted Cassidy played Lurch, the butler on 'The Addams Family'. Okay, here is a connection, as tenuous as it may be- both actors have had extensive heart surgery. In May 2005, Denver underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery, and was subsequently diagnosed with throat cancer. He died September 2, from pneumonia and squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Cassidy suffered from health issues as he grew older. Some of the dialogue leading up to the first appearance of Maynard's "You rang" in each episode of Dobie Gillis were quite witty, while Lurch's was a matter of fact response to an Addams summons on the hangman's noose.
