Why are they called goosebumps if geese have feathers?

    Question #107346. Asked by 29CoveRoad. (Jul 23 09 6:36 PM)

This is my favourite explanation, sure it is for children but I like the imagery:

Does something ever give you goose bumps? Perhaps through excitement or through the cold air and freezing weather literally making you shake?

You might also know these as goose pimples in some countries, but you know what they are - the little lumps on your skin caused by muscle contractions that pull the hairs up technically.

Now this comes from the fact that when geese are plucked this is exactly what it looks like - goose bumps.

Therefore since they look the same the comparison was set, and that is the origin, in a nutshell, of this particularly descriptive and mentally vivid phrase.

A picture's worth a thousand words. Might as well go for 2,000.

This one is fairly aesthetic. Horrible URL, though.

    This one isn't.
