    A man in early 20th century America has been taken to court for his third strike. He knows he will be jailed for life. His guards talk amongst themselves, smoking cigarettes and seem to forget his presence so he just walks out of the court to freedom. What's the book?

    I imagine this question actually refers to the 21st Century rather than the 20th, as Third Strike trials only began in the 1990's.
