Well, Jan Ernst Matzeliger (1852 - 1889) made the first mass produced "sneakers" but Lyman Reed Blake invented a sewing machine to sew the soles of the sneakers, getting the patent in 1858.

However, sandals are probably the oldest footwear, originally appearing in ancient civilizations. The original shoes though, were made (not mass produced) around 1600 - 1200 B.C.
