Why is it that in many US states, one is not required to wear a motorcycle helmet, but is required to wear a seat belt?

    Question #107650. Asked by star_gazer. (Aug 03 09 8:26 AM)

I think the safety belt issue became so important after the crusade of Ralph Nader to have the safety of American automobiles looked into. He wrote "Unsafe at Any Speed" which highlighted a GM vehicle he thought was particularly unsafe. GM's attempts to discredit him and subsequent media attention led to the passage of the 1966 National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which required vehicles to have safety belts (among other safety features). If motorcycle safety were to have such a voice, I think we would have the same zeal for helmets as safety belts.

Colorado, Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire are the only states free of motorcycle laws. Others are mandatory for all or age related.
