Is there any scientifically attested geological phenomenon as a "sand fountain"? That is to say, can there be a substantial and prolonged eruption of sand from the desert floor as a result of the venting of naturally occuring gas deposits or gas issuing from pipes associated with oil extraction?

Description: While driving a pile, in "The Tenderloin" of San Francisco, heat builds up in the subsurface boiling the groundwater. The pile grinds the sand into a fine powder and mixes with the steam. Pressure begins to build and the fine powder is pushed upwards to the surface.
