    The province's Latin names, Novum Belgium or Nova Belgica, derive from the Latin name of the contemporary Dutch Republic, Belgium Foederatum. The Low Lands or the Netherlands (called in Latin Belgium) comprised at that time seventeen provinces, with the ten southern provinces under Spanish authority referred to as Belgium Regium.
