    How is rainfall accurately measured considering that rainfall could be completely different only a block away from where one is "measuring"?

    Often experts use instruments such as disdrometers and Doppler radar to measure the velocity of raindrops and estimate rainfall intensity.

    conventional wisdom has been that big drops fell faster than little drops. And, as they fell, drops reach a maximum speed known as terminal velocity - the speed at which gravity is matched by atmospheric drag.
    Meteorologists have used these assumptions to determine how much rain is falling by using radar to measure the speed of the drops.

    The attached article that I site is actually challenging these assumptions used traditionally by meteorologists. Interesting read:
