I don't know the burglar, but I'll answer the question about Guy Fawkes. He was a member of the 'Gunpowder Plot' of 1605. This group put 20 kegs of gunpowder in a room in Parliament (London) with intention of blowing it, King James I and his ministers up for their oppression of Roman Catholics in England. He was caught on 4 November 1605, tortured on the rack and executed. This event has been celebrated as Guy Fawkes day (November 5), which includes fireworks, masked children begging 'a penny for the guy,' and the burning of little effigies of the conspirator. It also is the origin of the word 'guy' to mean some fellow.

It could be Sir John Popham who, after a colourful early life, when he is said to have been a highwayman, became Lord Chief Justice and is best remembered as the judge at the trial of Guy Fawkes
