In the Northern Hemisphere, when the moon is waxing, the illumination progresses from new moon to full moon from right to left. In the moon's first quarter, the phase midway between new moon and full moon, the right half of the moon is lit, while the left half is in darkness.
When the moon is waning, the illumination regresses from right to left from full moon to new moon. In the moon's third quarter, the phase midway between full moon and new moon, the left half of the moon is lit, while the right half is in darkness.
