    From Genesis, Chapter 32 (referring to Jacob by 'he', when Esau returned home after over 20 years absence):

    13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

    14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

    15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

    16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

    "Yes!" Esau eagerly shouted. "What good is my birthright if I die of hunger tonight? I won't be alive to inherit anything, so my birthright has no value to me!" The Bible says that Esau despised his birthright.

    For one bowl of soup, Esau gave away the most valuable item he owned - his birthright. Esau, by giving away his birthright, gave away cows, sheep, goats, land, servants, money, and his family blessing for one bowl of stew that probably made his stomach hurt all night.

    According to Genesis 25:33-34: "Jacob said: 'Swear it to me this day.' And he [Esau] swore it, and sold his birthright to Jacob. And Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate, and drank, and rose and left, and Esau dishonored the birthright." (Translation my own. Feel free to reference the KJB or the NST translations for how they translate the term "n'zid 'adashim", which I have rendered as "lentil stew".)

    The point is, the amount of stew Esau got is never specified, and Jacob also gave him bread as part of the transaction.

    The proverbial "mess of pottage", often used to describe this bowl of stew isn't actually quoted as such in any English translation of the Bible.

    The King James Bible in ch25 v30 calls it "red pottage".
