    Who was the only Australian Senator to be elected Prime Minister?

    John Gorton was in the senate when he became Prime Minister but that was following the death of Harold Holt and not as the result of an election. Because the PM is traditionally a member of the lower house he resigned the senate postion soon afterwards and won a lower house seat in a by-election.

    The only case where a Senator was appointed Prime Minister was that of John Gorton, who subsequently resigned his Senate position and was elected as a member of the House of Representatives (Senator George Pearce was Acting Prime Minister for seven months in 1916 while Billy Hughes was overseas.
