One winter's morning in the 1800s a pattern of hoof-prints was found in the snow across several miles of English countryside. People at the time believed they had been made by the devil. What was most likely to have actually made them?

Ajdale - I checked a book I have on strange and mysterious occurrences and possible explanations, and this is what they said about the footprints that occurred in southern England on February 9, 1855. The footprints were 4 inches long, 2 3/4 inches wide, 8 inches apart and appeared to have been made by a creature with cloven hooves walking upright on two legs. Possible explanations: 1) A badger - Badgers place their hind feet in the marks left by their forefeet. Although it hibernates, it sometimes ventures out in search of food. 2) A pony with a broken shoe. 3) A kangaroo or other exotic animal - The animal might have escaped from a traveling menagerie and then returned to its cage without anyone noticing its absence.
