Famous for singing about a storied mountain chain, he also sang about a less well-known range with mightier peaks. What is his stage name, his birth name, and the names of the mountain ranges?

Could you be referring to Henry John Deutschendorf, aka John Denver?

His most well known tune is "Rocky Mountain High" - here is Denver performing the classic:

Also, Denver's catalogue includes the "not-so-famous" Wrangle Mountain:

    Exactly!

The official spelling is "Wrangell," although the Russian German for whom it is named, Фердина́нд Петро́вич Вра́нгель, is known in English as Baron Ferdinand Petrovich von Wrangel, with one "l".

"In English texts, Wrangel is sometimes spelled Vrangel, a transliteration from Russian, which more closely represents its pronunciation in German, or Wrangell."

One of the 16,000+ (a "sixteener") peaks is visible from my living room window, and another if we step outside.
