The last recorded highwayman in Britan was George Cutterman who plied his trade in North Yorkshire. He was responsible for scores of robberies in the area, usually from travellers on the Great North Road. A reward of 200 guineas was offered for his capture, and law officers finally tracked him down in 1824. His normal occupation was the landlord of the King's Head at Kirklington. On his way to York for questioning and trial, Cutterman leapt from the top of the coach that was transporting him. He made good his escape and was never seen again.
