As some countries have two capitals (e.g., Bolivia has Sucre as the judicial or constitutional capital, and La Paz as the administrative capital), and South Africa manages to have three, the answer is even more complex than simply trying to come up with an accurate definition of the number of countries. (And how do you count dependencies?)

Here is a list of all of the world's capital cities.

As I have yet to learn to count I was unable to figure out specifically how many of them exist.

Wiki: "This is a list of national capitals of the world, in alphabetical order. Territories and dependencies, non-sovereign states including associated states, and entities whose sovereignty is disputed, are shown in italics."
They number 247...give or take "whatever."
