The K series of Chryslers were introduced in 1981 under the guidance of then company president Lee Iacocca. According to allcar.com, manufacturers often designated a new line of cars by assigning a letter before the names were chosen. Ads proclaimed, 'The K-cars are coming' in early 1981, and the name stuck.
