How can a VHS video camera zoom so far with a short lens while an SLR still camera needs a very long lens to do half the amount?

its not just the lense length that zooms in it is also the mechanical zoom inside.....diferent company different technique to zoom in and some are just better than others.

You can't find still cameras with short zoom lenses although the digital are much shorter than manual ones. But a cheap camcorder can have a 35X zoom which is optical yet fits in a small casing. But having some inside would certainly explain part of the situation.
