When millions and millions of barrels of oil get pumped out of the ground, what takes its place?

Question #110277. Asked by serpa. (Oct 28 09 6:45 PM)

Not as much as you might think.

Usually the oil is not in a big cavern that becomes empty, but in cracks from which it must be forced out. Sometimes water is injected into those cracks to force out more. If the rock or soil collapses or "subsides," that's not necessarily considered bad since it squeezes out more oil.

This site doesn't mention any problems with emptying an oil-bearing sediment of its oil.

I'm going to pm someone who should know more about this.

Whoops--I thought you asked, "What takes place?"

I think water often takes its place, but sometimes just air does.
