Sounds like the legendary John Dillinger. On March 3, 1934, Dillinger escaped from the "escape-proof" (as it was dubbed by local authorities at the time) Crown Point, Indiana county jail which was guarded by many police and national guardsmen. Newspapers reported that Dillinger had escaped using a fake gun made from wood blackened with shoe polish. Just as a matter of interest for trivia buffs John Dillinger also fashioned a gun out of a bar of soap to make a prison escape. This happened in 1934 at the "escape proof" Lake County Jail which was guarded by an army of police and National Guard troops. He then stole the sheriff's new Ford to make his get away.
