"A plant considered undesirable, unattractive, or troublesome, especially one growing where it is not wanted, as in a garden."
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/weed
A plant considered decorative or useful in one environment may be considered a weed in another, due to its different impact on the local ecology.
"Paterson's curse, Echium plantagineum (known as Salvation Jane in South Australia) is an introduced winter annual from the Mediterranean. Free of native Mediterranean plant and insect communities, it has become a dominant pasture weed of temperate Australia." (South Australian pastoralists welcomed it as a drought-relief source of fodder, hence its local nickname.)

According to an old gardeners saying "a weed is a plant in the wrong place". In my garden I have lots of plants in the wrong place.

"Of all the saddest words
That I have ever heard
The saddest is the story
Told me by a bird
He had spent about an hour
A Chatting with a flower
and here ís the tale the flower told
Ooooh, I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
an onion patch, an onion patch
I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch
and all I do is cry all day
Boo hoo, boo hoo
The air ís so strong it takes my breath away
feee---you
I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
oh won't you come and play with me
Who put me in this bed?
I'll bet his face is red
I call him down with every teardrop that I shed
If I only had him here
I'd take him by the ear
And make him share my misery
Ooooh, I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
an onion patch, an onion patch
I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch
and all I do is cry all day
Boo hoo, boo hoo
The air ís so strong it takes my breath away
feee---you
I'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch,
oh won't you come and play with me"
In most gardens, a petunia is a flower to be desired. In an onion patch, it's a weed.
