Why are historians praising the Mongols by saying they helped link regions and promoted cross cultural trade when they were cold blooded barbarians?

The great Mongol leader Ghengis Khan was certainly a successful warrior; but, he also did much to unite his people and help the Mongolian culture flourish. It is a mistake to the think of the Mongols merely as "cold blooded barbarians."
