The War of 1812.
"The British finally repealed the hated Orders in Council on June 16, 1812. News of this move however, arrived in the U.S. much too late. The American Senate approved a motion declaring war on Britain on June 18, 1812." http://www.galafilm.com/1812/e/background/amer_embargo.html
The British did a lot more to the Executive Mansion than leave cannon marks on it, though, and the Americans gained considerable international stature by taking on the British. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_1812#United_States
