Yup, sure did. We beat that one to death a couple of years ago on here, but let's leave that question to R.I.P. First I remember hearing of it was when my daughter came home from her junior high Alaska studies course telling about it some 15 years ago. And that doesn't mean I was never "taught" about it in school, just that I didn't learn it. American forces arrived at Attu the following May, waging a 19-day campaign before they retook the island. Most of the fighting was hand-to-hand combat in 120 mph winds, driving rain and dense, damp fog. Of an estimated 2,500 Japanese troops on Attu, only 28 were taken prisoner. The others died in battle or committed suicide with their own grenades. American deaths numbered about 550 among more than 15,000 troops. Yes. The Aleutian Islands Campaign was a struggle over the Aleutian Islands, part of Alaska, in the Pacific campaign of World War II.
