What Canadian is famous to hundreds of millions, but almost unknown in his own country?

Question #110579. Asked by unclerick. (Nov 08 09 11:07 AM)

As a Canuck (though a somewhat enlightened one) I submit that Henry Norman Bethune, a Canadian physician and medical innovator, fits the bill.

For a variety of reasons, most notably:

Virtually unknown in his homeland during his lifetime, Bethune received international recognition when Chairman Mao Zedong of the People's Republic of China published his essay entitled In Memory of Norman Bethune, which documented the final months of the doctor's life in China. Almost the entire Chinese population knew about the essay which had become required reading in China's elementary schools during China's Cultural Revolution (1966-76).

This what you had in mind unclerk?

It is still unknown if this woman actually was a woman. She abdicated her throne, supposedly for her religion, but it is also known that she was "wasteful," creating hundreds of new titles in her country. She left her country and changed her name, was involved in a crime in France, and is buried in a very honored location. Who is she?

A Pole had two violin concertos, the second is very famous, the first, much less. A Czech had two string quartets, first is very famous, second almost unknown. A Russian had two piano concertos, first is probably the most famous ever written, second almost unknown. Another Russian wrote two symphonies, first is often played, second nearly never. Do you know who those guys were?
