Where will one find Schubert's Mazurka musically referred to?

    Question #110665. Asked by Baloo55th. (Nov 11 09 4:21 PM)

In Erik Satie's Embryons desséchés ("Dessicated embryos"):

"The parts of the composition are:...

    2. (Desiccated embryo) of an Edriophthalma (1 July 1913), dedicated to Edouard Dreyfus:...in this part of the composition he makes fun of Frédéric Chopin's funeral march (by the way calling it a "famous" mazurka by Schubert - now, there is no "famous" mazurka by Schubert: Schubert composed many dances, but no mazurkas - mazurkas are Polish dances: Chopin had been the most famous Polish composer that ever lived in Paris, and he had particularly favoured the composition of mazurkas... there's the link Satie makes with a curb)."

"Satie was well known for curious directions to the would-be performer of his piano works, and also a sort of "running commentary" which he inserted into his humouristic works."

Yay! Some of the directions include ones to play 'nocturnally' and 'as dry as a cuckoo'. The 'dessicated embryos' composition is divided into sections bearing the scientific names of sea cucumbers. Makes 'MacArthur Park' and 'Whiter Shade of Pale' look quite normal......
