We usually think of this stuff as red. Not red-red, just red. But this time it's green, and is actually a surname, not a plastic. (Beware red herrings.) Well, so he's green, but his son was neither a Roman nor a boxer. His cousin, however, was part of a triumvirate, no measly little trio, though certainly not Roman. So, who *are* the Roman and the boxer and the triumvir? And, especially, who's green?

Question #110724. Asked by queproblema. (Nov 13 09 11:47 PM)

    Watchkeeper

Cassius Marcellus Clay (the abolitionist, not the boxer) was the son of Green Clay (clay being a plastic mineral, often red).

His second cousin, Henry Clay, was one of the "Great Triumvirate" or "Immortal Trio" with Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun.

So the Roman is Gaius Cassius Longinus, assassin of Julius Caesar, the boxer is Muhammad Ali and the triumvir is Henry Clay.

Yes, Green Clay! A soldier, politician, and the richest man in Kentucky in his day. What a name--there must be a reason for it. Perhaps he was simply dubbed with a family name.

All your connections are exactly what I had in mind.

There's a different green clay that can be facially applied.
