    I recently watched an excellent documentary on the "dust bowl" which devastated a large area of the United States in the 1930's. A couple of the old timers interviewed said that some of the plants and crops were killed by static electricity which was generated by the wind and dust. Is this possible?

    Yes, very possible. Dry conditions are ripe for static electricity charges, as illustrated by this article. Note the book by Timothy Egan, which was a source for the PBS series on the Dust Bowl:
