What protects a woodpecker from getting its brains scrambled from all the wood pecking?

Question #110843. Asked by unclerick. (Nov 17 09 9:47 PM)

There is very little research into how a woodpecker is protected from frequent and intense head pounding. However, it has some unique head anatomy that might protect it, as well as by the way it pecks.

It has a tightly packed brain in the skull with very less cerebrospinal fluid. The brain is packed very tightly by a spongy bone. The beak is held in place by powerful muscles and the tongue muscle extends to the back of the skull.

Also the bird pecks in a straight line without any rotation of the head. These features probably protect the woodpeckers brain from damage.
