I know what a flange is, but how did it get that name and why is it called a flange?

According to Chamber's dictionary it's obscure, but may well be extended from flank to mean a specific type of projecting edge.
Oxford suggests possibly from French 'Flancher' meaning to bend. So there are theories on it but no certainty
